Never restrict the airflow into the computer by blocking the front vents or air intake. Do not place the keyboard, with the keyboard feet down, directly against the front of the desktop unit as this also restricts airflow. Keep the computer away from excessive moisture, direct sunlight, and extremes of heat and cold.

Should you need or want to upgrade your ROM, you may: Order an upgraded ROMPaq diskette from Compaq. Order the Support Software CD for Compaq Desktop, Portable, and Workstation Products. Download the latest ROMPaq images from the Compaq World Wide Web site (www.compaq.com).
Page 31
Remote ROM Flash allows the system administrator to safely upgrade the ROM on remote Compaq Deskpro 4000S Personal Computers directly from the centralized network management console. Enabling the system administrator to perform this task remotely, on multiple computers, results in a consistent deployment of and greater control over Deskpro 4000S ROM images over the network.
Page 32
The FailSafe Boot Block ROM allows for system recovery in the unlikely event of a ROM flash failure, for example, if a power failure occurs during a ROM upgrade. The Boot Block is a flash-protected section of the ROM that checks to validate the system ROM each time power to the system is turned on.

Page 34
Enabling the system administrator to perform these tasks remotely, on multiple computers, results in consistent deployment of and greater control over Deskpro 4000S security parameters over the network. It also results in greater productivity and lower total cost of ownership.
Page 35
Shutdown, refer to the online Remote Management Administration Guide. The Replicated Setup feature gives an administrator the ability to easily copy one Deskpro 4000S setup configuration to other computers of the same model. This allows for faster, more consistent configuration of multiple Deskpro 4000S computers.
Page 36
You can configure the power button of the Compaq Deskpro 4000S Personal Computer to function as a suspend button. This feature enables quick recovery from a very low power state and promotes decreased power usage. Appendix HIPPING REPARATION In preparation for shipping the computer, complete the following steps: 1. Back up the hard drive files onto PD discs, tape cartridges, or diskettes. Be sure that the backup media is not exposed to electrical or magnetic impulses while stored or in transit. The hard drive locks automatically when the system power is turned off.
Page 136
Shipping Preparation 7. Pack the system components and external devices in their original packing boxes or similar packaging with sufficient packing material to protect them. For environmental nonoperating ranges, refer to Appendix B, “Specifications.”...
appendix EPLACING THE The real-time clock battery that came with the computer is nonreplaceable and is permanently installed on the system board. WARNING: The system board contains a clock/CMOS lithium battery. The lithium battery may explode if mistreated. The battery is soldered into place and may not be removed.
Page 138
Replacing the External Battery The battery connector is keyed for proper installation. Replacing the Battery 4. Remove the backing from the adhesive on the hook-and- loop fastener strip attached to the battery, and attach the battery as shown. 5. Replace the system unit cover. 6.
OARD WITCHES This chapter provides jumper and switch information for the Compaq Deskpro 4000S Series of Personal Computers. Switch Settings CAUTION: Do not configure the system board to operate faster than the speed at which the processor is rated. Doing this could result in unreliable operation or processor damage.
To change the system board jumpers, you must remove the computer cover. For procedures on removing the computer cover, refer to Chapter 5, “Upgrading the Desktop Computer.” CAUTION: To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal system components to cool before touching.
